Comprehensive chimney care for your home's safety and efficiency

Local Chimney Sweep And Cleaning

Creosote builds up every time you burn wood - and it's the #1 cause of chimney fires. We clean the full flue system from top to firebox, removing soot, glazed creosote, and blockages so your chimney draws properly and your family stays safe.

Chimney Inspection

Level 1, 2, or 3 - we match the inspection to the situation. Buying a home? Level 2 with video. Annual checkup? Level 1 covers it. We document everything with photos and give you a clear report, not a sales pitch.

Chimney Repair

Cracked crowns, crumbling mortar joints, damaged flue tiles - we fix what's broken before it becomes a bigger problem. Most repairs take a day or less, and we'll show you exactly what needs work before we start.

Chimney Cap Installation

A chimney without a cap is an open invitation for rain, raccoons, and downdrafts. We install stainless steel and copper caps with built-in spark arrestors, custom-sized to fit your flue opening exactly.

Chimney Liner

Older chimneys often have cracked clay tiles or no liner at all - both are fire hazards. We install stainless steel and cast-in-place liners that meet current code and actually improve your draft.

Chimney Masonry Repair

Brick and mortar don't last forever, especially in humid climates. We repoint deteriorated joints, replace spalled bricks, and match existing materials so the repair blends in. Catches water problems before they reach your interior walls.

Chimney Flashing Repair

That dark stain on your ceiling near the chimney? Probably failed flashing. We remove the old material, install new step and counter flashing, and seal everything properly. Stops leaks at the source.

Chimney Rebuilds

When repair isn't enough, we rebuild. From the roofline up or from the foundation - depends on how far the damage goes. New masonry, new liner, new cap, new flashing. Done right so you won't need us again for decades.

Chimney Animal Removal

Scratching sounds? Foul smell? Birds, squirrels, and raccoons love chimneys. We remove them humanely, clear out nesting material, and cap the flue so they can't get back in.

Fireplace Cleaning

Ash piling up in the firebox, soot on the damper, smoke stains on the surround - we clean it all. Includes the firebox, smoke shelf, and damper assembly. Your fireplace will look and work like it should.

Chimney Fireplace Repair

Smoke pouring into the room instead of going up? Damper stuck? Cracked smoke chamber? We diagnose the actual problem - not guess - and fix it. Most fireplace issues are straightforward once you know where to look.

Firebox Repair

Cracked firebricks and deteriorated refractory panels are more than cosmetic - they let heat reach combustible framing behind the wall. We replace damaged bricks and mortar with proper heat-rated materials.

Gas Fireplace Cleaning

Gas fireplaces still need annual service. Dust coats the burner and logs, the pilot assembly corrodes, and the glass fogs up. We clean the full unit - burner, pilot, glass, and venting - so it runs clean and stays under warranty.

Gas Fireplace Repair

Pilot won't stay lit? No heat? Remote stopped working? We troubleshoot gas fireplace issues from thermocouples to valve assemblies. Certified on all major brands - Heatilator, Lennox, Napoleon, Majestic, and more.

Wood Stove Repair

Door gaskets wear out, baffles warp, glass cracks. We service all wood stove brands - replace worn parts, adjust the door seal, and make sure your stove drafts correctly. Gets your heat output back where it should be.

Pellet Stove Repair

Auger jams, igniter failures, control board errors - pellet stoves have more moving parts than most people realize. We diagnose and repair the issue, clean the exhaust path, and get your stove feeding and burning properly again.

Duct Cleaning

Your HVAC pushes air through every duct in the house - along with whatever's living in them. Dust, pet dander, mold spores, construction debris. We clean the full system and you'll notice the difference in air quality immediately.

Dryer Duct Cleaning

Lint in your dryer vent is a fire waiting to happen - it's one of the top causes of house fires nationally. We clean the full run from the dryer to the exterior vent. Clothes dry faster, energy bill drops, fire risk gone.

Commercial Air Duct Cleaning

Restaurants, offices, multi-unit buildings - commercial ductwork collects grease, dust, and allergens at scale. We schedule after hours to keep your business running and bring your system up to health code standards.

Chimney Cap Installation

November 27, 2025 Walnut Hill
Problem

The chimney lacked a proper cap and showed a small, rusting screened cap with a cracked and spalling concrete crown and deteriorated mortar around the top. A top-down inspection revealed two clay flues, with the larger flue exhibiting heavy black soot/creosote and debris buildup, and the firebox rear masonry was spalled and eroded, indicating water intrusion and compromised structure.

Solution

I fabricated and installed a custom copper chimney cap with expanded mesh and mounting flange, and installed a stainless steel chase cover on the chase, fastening and sealing the base with a black sealant bead. I removed loose debris and cobwebs from the accessible flue openings and verified that the roof flashing around the chase appeared intact. I documented the condition and provided a recommendation and estimate for masonry crown repair, repointing, and firebox refractory repair or relining.

The new cap and chase cover restore weatherproofing, prevent animal entry and reduce spark/creosote discharge, improving immediate chimney safety and performance. The customer was advised to schedule the recommended masonry and firebox repairs to address the underlying deterioration.

Keeping Your Petersburg Chimney Safe: A Local's Guide to Maintenance

From historic Old Towne brick to modern constructions, Petersburg chimneys face unique challenges from our Virginia climate. This guide offers essential, locally-focused maintenance tips to keep your hearth safe and efficient all year long.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from Petersburg

I live in an older home in Petersburg's historic district. Does that affect the cost of a chimney cleaning and inspection? LOCAL

+

In Petersburg's historic district, expect to pay between $175 and $300 for a standard Level 1 chimney inspection and cleaning. However, the unique challenges posed by older homes may increase costs. Many historic chimneys lack modern flue liners, requiring a more in-depth Level 2 inspection to evaluate their condition. Given Petersburg's humid climate, regular assessments are crucial to catching issues like deterioration early. A thorough inspection not only meets the standards set by the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code but also ensures the safety and functionality of your heating system.

Considering the Petersburg, VA climate, how often do I really need to get my chimney swept? LOCAL

+

Annual chimney inspections and cleanings are strongly recommended for Petersburg residents. While the NFPA 211 standard suggests this frequency, our local humid winters can lead to rapid creosote buildup, especially if you use your fireplace often. Even occasional users should schedule yearly inspections to catch potential issues like blockages from nesting animals or storm debris. The upkeep of historic masonry chimneys is essential, given their susceptibility to Virginia weather. For pricing, expect to pay between $175 and $350, which is a small investment for your family’s safety.

When is the best time of year to schedule a chimney sweep in Petersburg, VA, considering our local weather and busy seasons? LOCAL

+

The best time to schedule a chimney sweep in Petersburg is during late spring or summer, from April to August. This off-peak period allows for better availability compared to the busy fall months when everyone prepares for cold weather. Scheduling during warmer months not only ensures your chimney is ready for the winter but also provides a chance to address any necessary masonry repairs. Waiting for the fall rush may lead to longer wait times and less opportunity to complete needed work before the first chilly evenings arrive.

With Petersburg's mix of historic homes and our variable Virginia weather, how often should I really get my chimney inspected for safety? LOCAL

+

Chimney inspections are crucial for Petersburg homeowners, especially given the mix of historic properties and variable weather. While national standards recommend annual checks, many local homes feature older masonry that requires extra attention. Our humid summers and freeze-thaw cycles can damage chimney structures, making yearly inspections essential to catch issues like cracked mortar early. A CSIA-certified professional can ensure your chimney is safe from creosote buildup and structural deterioration, while also preventing blockages caused by wildlife seeking warmth in your chimney.

Are chimney inspections legally required when I sell my home in Petersburg, VA? LOCAL

+

In Petersburg, there’s no state law mandating chimney inspections when selling a home. However, the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code emphasizes the necessity of maintaining chimneys in safe working condition. As a result, it's common practice for home inspectors and buyer’s agents in the Petersburg market to request a Level 2 inspection as part of the sales process, particularly in historic neighborhoods like Old Towne. This thorough inspection identifies hidden hazards, preventing liability issues for both buyers and sellers and ensuring a safe transaction.
